Some of the Largest Credit Unions by States in the US

NOTE: I will periodically update the CU news below

I set the hyperlinks below, if you see words that are UNDERLINED below, it’s linked to something (news article from a website, the home page website of the CU, etc).

Forget Bieber Fever, Lady Gaga, Tebowmania and Linsanity! For the average American fed up with excessive bank fee and the Small Business owners in need of business loans but get rejected by Mega Banks and community banks, the hottest thing right now is CREDIT UNION. Press release on April 12, 2012: Credit Union Industry Assets Hit $1 Trillion in the first quarter of 2012. Credit Unions gain 1.2 million new members in the first quarter of 2012, in which 500,000 new member gain occurred in March 2012 alone. Credit unions issue record $12 Billion in Business Loans in 2011 helping America’s small businesses.

Would your Bank give back $10 Million Profit to YOU the customers? Well, Credit Unions would give back because they are member-owned entities very mindful of profit-sharing with their members-owners. Read this news about Founders Federal CU in South Carolina giving back $10 Million PROFIT to its members in November 2011 in the form of BONUS DIVIDEND. And watch their TV commercial via YouTube. Founders FCU is also doing good deeds in the local community, the CU is donating $25,000  to the Chesterfield Economic Development Alliance in South Carolina to help create jobs and increase capital investment.

Deluxe Company’s new software called “SwitchAgent” makes switching to Credit Union easy. Cut the hassle of changing automatic monthly payments to new account. Or ask for a Switch Kit at the Credit Union.

The CU Centers Shared Branching Survey Results in 2012 shows that 98% of the survey respondents rating Shared Branching as important in relationship to their other delivery channels. Shared Branching received good to excellent ratings by 97% of the survey respondents on staff knowledge and 90% on training for support staff.

Excellent response and commentary by Patrick S. Jury, the CEO of the Iowa Credit Union League about the “Not-for-Profit” status of credit union and their *Partial* tax exemption as opposed to the corporate welfare handout that the Mega Banks receive, and the S-Corporation tax-exempt status sought by community banks. Also an excellent blog I read “Banks Not Lending, But Not Willing to Let Credit Unions Lend Either“. Call your Senators and House members in Congress to approve the Credit Union business lending cap increase to 27.5%. The House bill is called H.R. 1418 and the Senate Bill is called S. 2231 for the Credit Union business lending cap increase.

I understand that most of you who are unhappy with bank fees are customers of the Mega Banks. Below I have sorted out some of the largest Credit Unions broken out by states.

  • The larger the CU, the more likely they are to have the kind of things you are used to having + the human touch at the local CU that you don’t get at the Mega Banks. This news just in on April 2, 2012: Small Business Lending Index Shows Large Banks Approve Only 10% of Loans; Credit Unions Approve More Than 50%.
  • CU are not-for-profit entities, when you become a member, you become a part owner with voting rights and other perks such as PROFIT-SHARING. Founders Federal CU in South Carolina Shares $10 Million ($10,000,000) PROFIT with its members in the form of BONUS DIVIDEND in November 2011.
  • CU also charge lower or no fee compared to the Mega Banks.
  • And CU that are members of NCUA insure each depositor up to $250,000 (similar to the FDIC for banks).
  • Credit Unions are convenient: CU that are members of the Shared Branch Network (aka: CU Service Centers or call 1-800-919-CUSC (2872) for locations near you) have over 4,500 Shared Branches & NO-fee locations nationwide, and CU that are on the CO-OP network have over 28,000 surcharge-free ATM nationwide including Free ATMs at McDonald’s and 7-Eleven + Canada and a few other foreign countries. CO-OP ATMs can accept deposits as well as withdrawals, call 1-800-919-2872 to find out deposit-taking ATMs near you. Some credit unions are on Allpoint ATM network with over 70,000 surcharge-free ATM nationwide, plus in the UK and Australia. Watch this YouTube video about the Credit Union Difference.

If you have Direct Deposit and Automatic Bill Payment setup at the bank you’re unhappy with, see this HOW-TO guide on bank switch. The HOW-TO guide will help you make the transition smoother and more seamless. There are over 7,000 Credit Unions in the US, I have only listed less than 10% of the total CU in the country. For a more comprehensive search and to learn about the benefits and convenience of Credit Unions and money-saving tips (i.e. Discounted check-printing from mail-order companies, US Postal money orders that cost much less than the Mega Banks), use this HOW-TO guide above. It also provides website links on searching for Credit Unions based on ZIP code address (for community-based CU), work affiliation (for work-related CU), religious affiliation (for religious-related CU).

I personally prefer to open accounts at Credit Unions in my local area, so that I can attend the annual meeting without long distance travel and I know the CU make loans to support my local small business and residents.
